Four Running Races Happening in October | Find Your Stride | Edinburgh Podiatrist

As the crisp air of autumn settles in, October brings a fantastic line-up of races across the UK. From scenic trails to bustling city streets, there’s something for everyone this month. Here are four events worth considering:

Runners in a marathon pass cheering crowd by brick building. Numbered bibs visible. Energetic mood with food truck and signs in background. Black and white.
October offers the perfect conditions to test your legs and enjoy some truly unforgettable races.

1. Kielder Marathon

Kielder, Northumberland – 5 October

Often described as one of the UK’s most beautiful marathons, this race truly has it all. The organisation is top-notch, the field is large enough to create a lively buzz yet small enough to give you stretches of solitude, and the setting is nothing short of breathtaking. Expect rolling trails with plenty of climbs and descents, keeping things interesting from start to finish.

2. Great Scottish Run

Glasgow, Lanarkshire – 5 October

This popular urban half marathon (with a 10K option) kicks off with a dramatic challenge: the steep climb up Vincent Street. It’s a tough opener, but the atmosphere of thousands of runners powering uphill makes it an unforgettable moment. Once you’ve conquered the incline, you’ll enjoy a vibrant route through the city, finishing with a rewarding stretch through Pollok Park.

3. Hadrian’s Wall Half Marathon

Hexham, Northumberland – 12 October

A point-to-point trail race steeped in history, this half marathon begins with a climb that peaks just 2.5km in. From there, it’s a mainly downhill journey into Hexham. Along the way, you’ll run beside monuments and sections of the iconic wall itself, making this an event that’s as culturally rich as it is scenic.

4. Newcastle Way Marathon & Half Marathon

Newcastle, County Down – 5 October

Following the full 42km Newcastle Way trail, this marathon showcases rugged beauty without fully delving into the Mourne Mountains. With 800m of ascent, it’s a challenging yet rewarding route. The half marathon offers a gentler alternative, cutting out most of the steep climbs but still providing stunning views and a memorable running experience.

As the leaves turn and temperatures drop, October offers the perfect conditions to test your legs and enjoy some truly unforgettable races. Whether you prefer pounding city streets or tackling off-road trails, this month’s events will help you find your stride.
